About MBOMIPA WMA

MBOMIPA (Matumizi Bora ya Maliasili Idodi na Pawaga) is a community-based Wildlife Management Area in Iringa, Tanzania, uniting 21 villages to conserve wildlife and sustainably manage natural resources within the greater Ruaha Ecosystem. Located near Ruaha National Park, it empowers communities, supports livelihoods, protects biodiversity, and promotes responsible land use through participatory, community-led conservation initiatives for long-term resilience and development.

Why MBOMIPA WMA exists

MBOMIPA Wildlife Management Area (MBOMIPA WMA) was established to protect wildlife, conserve natural habitats, and ensure that surrounding communities benefit from sustainable use of natural resources within the Ruaha Ecosystem. By creating a community-managed conservation area, the WMA helps reduce threats such as illegal hunting, habitat degradation, and unplanned land use. It also promotes responsible tourism, regulated wildlife utilization, and community participation in conservation efforts. Through this approach, MBOMIPA WMA supports both environmental protection and sustainable development.

Key Highligts

Wildlife conservation

Mbomipa WMA is dedicated to conserving wildlife and protecting the natural ecosystems that support them. The area provides a safe habitat for a wide range of species including elephants, lions, antelopes, and many bird species that are part of the greater Ruaha ecosystem. Through community-led conservation, anti-poaching efforts, and sustainable land management, Mbomipa helps preserve biodiversity and maintain healthy wildlife populations while protecting forests, rivers, and grasslands that are essential for ecological balance.

Community development

Income generated from wildlife-based activities within Mbomipa WMA directly benefits the local communities that manage and protect the area. Revenue is invested in important community services such as schools, health clinics, clean water projects, and local infrastructure like roads and community facilities. This approach ensures that conservation creates real and lasting benefits for the people living near the wildlife resources.

Participatory governance

Mbomipa WMA operates through a participatory governance system where local communities play a central role in decision-making and management. Village representatives and authorized community institutions work together to oversee conservation activities, manage revenue, and ensure transparency in operations. This inclusive approach strengthens accountability, empowers local people, and promotes long-term stewardship of wildlife and natural resources.

Regulated hunting and tourism

Mbomipa WMA supports responsible tourism and regulated hunting as sustainable ways to generate income while maintaining wildlife conservation. Carefully managed photographic tourism, game viewing, and licensed hunting activities attract visitors from around the world. These activities are regulated to ensure wildlife populations remain healthy while providing revenue that supports conservation operations and contributes to the economic development of surrounding communities.
